First dive of the year on the 2nd January.. at night , with my new 60mm macro lens and custom built port..
The new lens is quite a bugger to use but I like to think I got one decent shot.
This little guy was about the size of your thumb. There has been ever so slight cropping to help with composition. As you can see, when I put on the wet macro this lens will be capable of amazing stuff... Just hope the operator is too!
Thanks Tauri.. Yeah, I have the same problem in that the lens is better than the user... for now!!
In the low light environment of underwater I need to open up the lens to f8 or more to allow enough light hitting the sensor to focus on the subject.. this in turn reduces the dof to a razor sharp plane. In this particular image, the fish is about the size of your thumb and its head the size of your thumb nail.. the distance between his eyes is probably less than 5mm but you can see that the farthest eye is out of focus.. Not a big deal here because it's not a 'head on' shot. If I were shooting a nudi for eg, I would like the whole body to be in sharp focus
I am experimenting with a more powerful focus light to allow me to use a smaller aperture and get more of the subject in focus.. It's a matter of playing around with it, I don't actually need to think about aperture for exposure as my strobes provide all the light I need for the final image!
Wow - now this is seriously clear and conscise! When you say it's a bugger to use - why is that so? Is is too exactling? I have this problem with my 50mm prime...the lens is better than I am!!
